Blue Orthodontics provides TMJ treatment in Scottsdale at our Bell Road office, east of Tatum Boulevard. Jaw pain often starts with a bite that puts uneven pressure on your jaw muscles every time you chew, talk or swallow. Dr. Dan Blue finds where that pressure comes from and recommends the simplest path to relief. Your visit starts with a complimentary consultation and an honest answer about whether your bite plays a role.
How does your bite connect to jaw pain?
Your bite connects to jaw pain because uneven contact between your teeth forces your jaw muscles to work harder. When those muscles stay tense, they can spasm and cause soreness, headaches or clicking.
Think of it like walking with a pebble in your shoe. You can do it, but your body compensates with every step, and eventually something aches. A bite interference works the same way for your jaw.
Orthodontic treatment often eases or reduces those symptoms by bringing your teeth together more evenly. Once the jaw no longer has to compensate, the muscles around it can relax.
TMJ or myofascial pain: what’s the difference?
TMJ pain comes from the jaw joint itself, while myofascial pain comes from the muscles and connective tissue around it. Many people have some of both, which is why a careful evaluation matters.
| TMJ (joint) pain | Myofascial (muscle) pain | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it starts | The hinge joint in front of each ear | Jaw, cheek, temple and neck muscles |
| How it often feels | Clicking, popping or catching when you move your jaw | Dull ache, tightness or tender spots |
| Common triggers | Uneven bite, grinding, joint strain | Clenching, stress, bite interferences |
| How we help | Bite evaluation, coordination with TMJ specialists | Bite correction, nightguards, referrals for muscle-focused care |
You don’t need to sort this out on your own. That’s our job at your evaluation.

Which treatments work best for bite-related jaw pain?
The best treatment depends on what’s driving your pain. We usually start with the least involved option that addresses the cause.
| Option | What it does | When we might suggest it |
|---|---|---|
| Nightguard or bite splint | Reduces clenching pressure during sleep so your jaw can rest | You grind or clench at night |
| Bite correction with braces | Moves teeth so your bite spreads force evenly | A misaligned bite contributes to your pain |
| Bite correction with clear aligners | Corrects many bite issues with removable trays | You want a nearly invisible way to fix your bite |
| Physical therapy referral | Targets tension in the jaw and neck muscles | Muscle tightness plays a big role |
| TMJ specialist care | Addresses joint problems beyond the bite | The joint itself needs focused treatment |

What happens at a TMJ evaluation in Scottsdale?
A TMJ evaluation is a hands-on look at how your jaw moves and how your teeth meet. It’s comfortable, and it gives you real answers.
- Share your story. Tell us when your jaw hurts and what you’ve tried so far.
- Bite check. Dr. Blue studies how your upper and lower teeth come together.
- Wear check. We look for flat or worn spots that suggest grinding.
- Movement check. We watch how your jaw opens, closes and slides side to side.
- Plan together. We explain what we found and talk through options, starting with the simplest.
What signs mean it’s time to see an orthodontist for jaw pain?
It’s time for an evaluation if jaw pain shows up most days or doesn’t improve with a soft diet and over-the-counter pain relief. A single, painless click now and then usually isn’t cause for concern.
Consider booking a visit if you notice:
- Daily soreness in your jaw, cheeks or temples
- Painful clicking or popping, not only sound
- Morning jaw tightness that suggests nighttime clenching
- A jaw that locks or catches partway open
- Chipped or worn teeth from grinding
How do insurance and payment work for TMJ care in Scottsdale?
We participate with most insurance plans and work with your insurance to keep care affordable. You’ll know your costs before treatment begins.
Because TMJ care and orthodontic care can fall under different benefits, we’ll review your coverage with you. Current patients can pay through the portal on our patient resources page.
We’re proud to give back, too. We support Paradise Valley School District and many other schools and events across the Valley, with giving that consistently tops $150,000 a year.

Frequently asked questions about TMJ treatment in Scottsdale
Can clear aligners help with TMJ?
Clear aligners can help when a misaligned bite contributes to your jaw pain. Dr. Blue will check your bite to see whether aligners are a good fit.
How long does it take to feel relief from TMJ treatment?
Relief timing depends on the cause and the treatment. A nightguard may help sooner, while bite correction works gradually as your teeth move.
Is a nightguard the same as a retainer?
No, a nightguard protects your teeth and jaw from clenching pressure, while a retainer holds teeth in place after orthodontic treatment. They look similar but do different jobs.
Can teens have TMJ problems?
Yes, teens can have jaw pain, clicking or clenching, too. We welcome consultations for patients from age 8 to 108.
Will you refer me to a TMJ specialist?
We work with TMJ specialists for interdisciplinary care. If your symptoms need their expertise, we’ll coordinate that care with you.
